Ford Motors adds three variants to the Explorer lineup, giving the browsers more choices in the best-selling SUV.

The new models are the Explorer Enthusiast ST, Explorer Platinum, and the Platinum Hybrid. All three variants target different market segments. The lower-priced Explorer Enthusiast ST and Explorer Platinum look to appeal to those in the market for reasonably priced SUVs while the Platinum Hybrid is aimed at customers looking for a luxury SUV.

“The market continues to grow for performance SUVs, and the ST currently accounts for nearly 20 percent of sales,” said Craig Patterson, Ford SUV marketing manager.

“With our new Explorer Enthusiast ST, we’ve made this Explorer performance SUV an even better value for more customers to enjoy, while maintaining the same exterior styling and performance — for an uncompromising, exciting ST driving experience,” he added.

Powering the Enthusiast ST will be the specially tuned 3.0-liter EcoBoost engine giving the newcomer 400hp and 562Nm of torque. The Enthusiast ST is said to come with a 10-speed automatic transmission with Ford’s SelectShift technology.

According to Ford, the Enthusiast ST will have a 12.3-inch digital cluster and heated sport-style steering wheel with paddle shifters and the ST logo. Soon-to-be owners can also expect features like Ford’s Co-Pilot360 technology including blind spot Information system with cross-traffic alert, lane-keeping system, hill start assist, pre-collision assist with automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, forward collision warning, dynamic brake support, and post-impact braking. Also included is a rearview camera with a built-in lens washer, auto headlamps with auto high beams.

The Enthusiast ST will be a four-wheel-drive unit while the Explorer Platinum will come as a rear-wheel-drive option.

The Platinum Hybrid will expand Ford’s fully hybrid-electric powertrain lineup although Ford did not release any specifics as to what hybrid powertrain will be outfitted in the Platinum Hybrid.

The Explorer Enthusiast ST, Explorer Platinum, and the Platinum Hybrid are set to hit the US market in June.
