Foreign boatman caught smuggling 500kg of fish into Sabah

SEMPORNA: Police arrested a boatman here for attempting to smuggle in 500kg of fish from Indonesia, yesterday.

Acting state marine police chief Superintendent Norzaid Md Said said police stopped a boat while conducting sea patrols in Tampi-Tampi waters, off here.

“Upon inspection, we found five containers containing a variety of fish, weighing 500kg. The boatman admitted to have illegally brought in the supply from Indonesia.

“He violated the law under the Fisheries Act and was detained for further action. Police also confiscated the containers and the boat,” he said, adding that everything seized is worth RM14,000.

Norzaid said the boat was towed to the district marine police base, adding that the 53-year-old boatman is from Kampung Bangau-Bangau, Indonesia.
