Forest Protection

6 January 2013

ILAGAN CITY, Isabela (PIA) - A strengthened multi-sectoral agreement among government agencies and non-government organizations is seen as a measure to further protect the forests, an environment official in Region 2 said over the weekend.

Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) - Isabela forestry specialist Arnold Frogoso said a multi-sectoral approach is the possible effective solution to illegal logging in the country.

Frogoso said the concerted work and strengthened government agency coordination and network must be putin place with the Departments of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), the Interior and Local Government (DILG), and National Defense (DND) at the forefront.

Meanwhile, the officials and staff of PENRO-Isabela expressed condolence with the family of Community Environment and Natural Resources Officer (CENRO) Alfredo Almueda of Maddela and Nagtipunan who was killed while performing his duty even on holiday break last January 1.

Almueda once served as officer-in-charge of PENRO-Isabela in 2008 and employees of the province's environment department considered him as a reformist leader and very strict in implementing campaign against illegal logging in the province.
