The SMBC Singapore Open golf tournament added another top golfer to its playing field on Wednesday (2 January) when it announced that England’s Paul Casey will take part in the US$1 million (S$1.37 million) event at the Sentosa Golf Club’s Serapong Course.

The 41-year-old Englishman was one of the in-form golfers last year with 12 top-20 finishes, including winning the Valspar Championship in Tampa, Florida, where he edged out golf superstar Tiger Woods by one stroke for the PGA Tour victory. He was also a key player in Team Europe’s resounding 17.5-10.5 victory over Team United States in the Ryder Cup last September.

He joins 2017 US Masters winner Sergio Garcia, World Golf Hall of Fame player Davis Love III, compatriot and rising golf star Matthew Kirkpatrick, as well as top Asian and Japan Tour golfers at the 17-20 January tournament.

Played at Singapore Open in 2012

The 13-time European Tour winner has played in the Singapore Open once before in 2012, finishing in joint-10th position on the same venue.

“It wasn’t a difficult decision to make as I have fond memories of the Singapore Open and Sentosa Golf Club,” said Casey, who is ranked No.22 in the world.

“I played well there in 2012 and I was impressed by the golf course and the overall set up. It is an ideal event for me to start the year and it will be a very good test early on in the year.”

Casey is no stranger to winning in Asia, having claimed the Shinhan Donghae Open in Korea in 2011, as well as the Volvo China Open and TCL Classic, also in China, both in 2005.

The tournament is jointly sanctioned by the Asian Tour and Japan Golf Tour Organisation. Tickets for the event are on sale via APACTix. Children below the age of 12 can access the event for free.
