Former KL lawyer charged with CBT worth RM40,000

KUALA LUMPUR: A former lawyer was charged at the sessions court here today with criminal breach of trust (CBT) involving RM40,000 belonging to his client two years ago.

P. Shanthanam, 58, who is now serving a five-year jail sentence after being found guilty of the same offence, pleaded not guilty when the charge was read to him before judge Datuk Zainal Abidin.

He was charged with embezzling RM40,000 belonging to property agent Lee Wai Chuang, 66, at P. Santhanam&Co, Unit B-2-13A, Block B, Upper Ground Level, Viva Mall, No 378, Jalan Ipoh in Sentul between July 16, 2015 and Jan 4, 2016.

The offence falls under Section 409 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum 20-year imprisonment, whipping and fine, upon conviction.

The court did not offer bail as the accused is now serving his jail sentence.

Deputy public prosecutor Norashikin Ibrahim prosecuted, while the accused was unrepresented.
