Former President of Singapore S R Nathan suffered a stroke last Tuesday (14 April).

A statement from Nathan’s family said he was admitted to Singapore General Hospital, but is now recovering and undergoing therapy, said media reports.

President Tony Tan said in a Facebook post on Wednesday night that he visited Nathan in hospital earlier this week. "When we visited him at the hospital earlier this week, we were happy to see that he was in good spirits and looking forward to being discharged," he wrote. He also wished Nathan a speedy recovery.

Nathan, 90, was Singapore’s president from 1999 to 2011, the sixth and longest-serving President.

He launched a book in January titled 'S R Nathan in conversation' which discussed historical and contemporary issues facing Singapore.

He was often seen at East Coast Park taking walks, but told The Straits Times in January that he had not done so for more than six months.
