RANAU: Four people were killed and two others injured when the car they were travelling in collided with an express bus at Jalan Ranau-Telupid here today.

The 2pm accident saw two men and two women killed on the spot.

The Proton Saga driver identified as Mohd Aziratul Khizam Azis, 23, was among those killed. The others had yet to be identified.

District police chief Deputy Superintendant Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said all the victims were travelling from Ranau towards Telupid.

“It was believed that the car driver lost control of the wheel which skidded to the right lane and crashed onto the oncoming express bus,” he said.

The collision caused massive damage to the Proton Saga, which turned turtle. Two of the six passengers who were injured were rushed to a hospital.

Farhan said the bus driver and 29 passengers on board were unhurt.

Meanwhile district fire and rescue chief Jimmy Lagung said the department received a distress call at 2.30pm and deployed nine firefighters to the scene.

Lagung, who led the rescue operation, said there were six passengers in the Proton Saga, four of whom were confirmed dead by the medical officer at the scene.

“Two others were taken to the hospital by passers-by before firefighters arrived. Firefighters then pulled out trapped bodies from the wreckage and carried out inspection to ensure the surroundings were safe,” he said, adding the operation ended at 4pm. © New Straits Times Press (M) Bhd
