Free screening of Tanda Putera at Umno General Assembly tonight

Umno delegates at the general assembly will get to watch the controversial film Tanda Putera with a free screening scheduled tonight at Dewan Merdeka in Putra World Trade Centre.

The screening of the movie was announced by Umno permanent chairman Tan Sri Badruddin Amiruldin during the debate session here earlier.

The controversial RM4.8-million Tanda Putera had upset the Chinese community with DAP and MCA earlier protesting the screening of the movie as they said several scenes and dialogue could incite racial tension.

They had also said that the movie implied that the Chinese were responsible for the racial riots in May 13, 1969.

DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang has earlier raised concerns as there was a scene of several Chinese youths urinating at a flagpole in the compound of the home of former Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Harun Idris. It had implied that Lim was one of the youths.

In a posting on the movie's Facebook page many months later, the administrator apologised for accusing Lim of being involved in the incident.

The movie opened in cinemas on August 29 but failed to draw in the crowds.

Film producer Datin Paduka Shuhaimi Baba later acknowledged she knew the movie would not garner much interest because of its genre, adding that historical movies were not popular among local movie goers who preferred horror movies and comedies.

The movie raked in only RM930,000 after playing for 25 days in cinemas, according to the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia’s (Finas) website. - December 5, 2013.
