Singapore bus commuters will soon be able to enjoy free wi-fi on board the SBS Transit buses, after the public transport operator announced on Wednesday (14 November) that it will be available on 18 bus services in February 2019.

The bus services – consisting of 300 buses – form part of the Bukit Merah Bus Package, mostly originating from Bukit Merah, HarbourFront, Kampong Bahru, Queen Street and Shenton Way bus Interchanges/terminals. They are: Service Nos. 5, 16, 57, 93, 120, 121, 122, 123/123M, 131/131M, 145, 160, 170, 195, 198, 272, 273, 400 and 402.

One of several new features

The free wi-fi service is one of several new features implemented as part of the Bukit Merah Bus Package committed obligations.

From Sunday (18 November), the Bukit Merah and HarbourFront bus interchanges will be installed with interactive touch-screen panels and digital feedback panels.

The interactive touch-screen panels provide travel information such as bus services, bus departure times, bus routes and locality maps. Commuters can also get up-to-date information such as service extension hours, and routes that are being diverted or delayed.

The digital feedback panels near the Passenger Service Offices allow the public to share feedback on the interchanges’ facilities such as toilet cleanliness and lighting.

In addition, there will be dedicated television screens at the two interchanges displaying information on local community events and activities, as well as mobile charging points for commuters to recharge their devices

On rainy days, commuters can also borrow umbrellas for free for 24 hours via a mobile application. The umbrella dispensers are located near the Passenger Service Offices at these bus interchanges.

“Commuter Chat” sessions to engage commuters

SBS Transit said it will also host quarterly “Commuter Chat” sessions at the two interchanges for the managers to engage commuters and listen to their feedback.

Its chief executive officer Gan Juay Kiat said, “We are leveraging on technology to boost our service quality as well as increase the accessibility and availability of information for commuters. We will continue to look for ways to make public transport travel a more commuter-friendly, convenient and seamless experience.”
