A 'Fried Green Tomatoes' TV Show Is in the Works and We're Freaking Out

From Country Living

Look out, Whistle Stop—Reba McEntire is coming to town!

According to Variety, the 65-year-old country singer will star in an upcoming television spin-off of Fried Green Tomatoes. The beloved film, which strikes the perfect balance between hilarious and sentimental, has been cherished by Southerners (and everyone else) for decades.

Based on Fannie Flagg's book by the same name, Fried Green Tomatoes tells the story of a bored housewife (Kathy Bates) who befriends a colorful old woman named Ninny Threadgoode (Jessica Tandy). Throughout the film, Ninny shares inspiring tales from her life in rural Alabama—most of which involve her free-spirited sister-in-law, Idgie Threadgoode (Mary Stuart Masterson). Idgie is known for her smart mouth and bad habits, making her one of the most interesting characters in the entire movie. So, of course, that's exactly who Reba will portray in the TV show!

The hour-long drama will be "a modernization of the novel and movie" that sets out to explore the lives of the original characters across a series of episodes, Variety reports. When present-day Idgie goes back to Whistle Stop, Alabama after spending a decade away, she must face "a changed town, estranged daughter, faltering cafe, and life-changing secret."

In addition to starring in the show, Reba will serve as executive producer alongside the original film's producer, Norman Lear.
