Fruit Ninja snags in iPhone 5, new iPod Touch

Players of the popular mobile video game "Fruit Ninja" may find themselves in trouble when playing the game on Apple's new iPhone 5 and iPod touch devices, a tech site said.

The Next Web cited reports by users that the screen stops responding to rapid touch input after rapid diagonal swipes —a gesture heavily used in the game.

"Despite the fact that this is a rare and unusual swiping motion, it does raise concerns for developers and gamers," The Next Web said. Verified issue

"We’ve verified that the issue exists on our iPhone 5, which is running iOS 6.0.1. But, since the issue occurs on iOS 6.0 devices as well, it’s possible that this is due to Apple’s tweaks to make the iPad mini reject accidental thumb touches. But, since the input tweaks are likely in action on the iPhone 4 and 4S as well, it seems unlikely," it added.

It said game developer CMA Megacorp noted the seeming glitch, while Recombu posted a video that shows the issue on the iPhone 5, but not the iPhone 4S.

Also, it said tests by Rene Ritchie at iMore initially found the iPhone 5 and iPod touch 5th gen were the only ones affected.

On the other hand, the report said the problem did not appear to be a glitch with the latest version of iOS, 6.0.1.

Screen hardware?

The Next Web said it is possible the problem lies in the affected devices' touch screen hardware.

"Both of them use the brand new in-cell touch technology that combines the digitizer and touch panel and laminates them to the front glass. This is the first time years that the same exact screen has been in the newest iPod touch and newest iPhone at the same time, so it seems likely that whatever is causing the issues is due to the in-cell tech," The Next Web said.

Game developers

However, it said the minor skipping or freezing issues on ultra-rapid swiping is not likely to affect regular users much.

But it may be a big deal for game developers, as games like "Fruit Ninja" rely on rapid diagonal swiping. — TJD, GMA News
