FSG have received ‘no firm bids’ for Liverpool as Matip sale starts ‘total overhaul’
Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG) have had ‘no firm bids’ for the club after putting the Reds up for sale three months ago, according to reports.
The America-based group put Liverpool up for sale in November after 12 years in charge, having bought the club for a cut-price £300million with the threat of administration hanging over it after the dysfunctional reign of Tom Hicks and George Gillett.
A section of the fanbase remain critical of FSG, led by principal owner John W Henry, due to a perceived lack of investment in the squad compared to some of their Premier League rivals.
The Daily Mail claimed yesterday that Liverpool are ‘no longer interested in a full sale of the club’ with ‘US investment firm RedBird Capital Partners, are considering upping their stake after learning that FSG aren’t now as keen on a full sale.’
It is claimed that ‘Anfield chiefs would rather welcome another minority stakeholder – like the 11 per cent RedBird boast – as a further 20 per cent sale could see FSG generate £1billion.’
And now The Athletic insists that there have been ‘no firm bids’ and ‘not much buzz’ about buying Liverpool with the ‘team’s dire form is not helping but the real issues are out of FSG’s hands’.
Liverpool – who lost 3-0 to Wolves on Saturday – are currently sitting tenth in the Premier League, 11 points off fourth-placed Newcastle United, despite coming very close to winning an unprecedented Quadruple last term.
The Athletic also point to a ‘struggling’ global economy for the lack of interest, while ‘interest rates went up again on both sides of the Atlantic last week’ with money ‘more expensive than it has been for years’.
But there are set to be big changes at Liverpool one way or another with Football Insider insisting that the Reds ‘ready to sell Joel Matip’ as they begin ‘total overhaul’ of their squad.
The former Cameroon international has struggled to remain fit during his time at Anfield and his performances have started to dip this season with Liverpool ‘planning to let Matip as well as fellow centre-back Nat Phillips go this summer and they will be made available to suitors’.
The report adds: ‘That will mean the Merseysiders are in the market for at least one senior centre-back as they prepare for what could be a substantial summer overhaul.’
