Gang of thieves busted stealing guests’ bags from five-star hotels in KL


KUALA LUMPUR: If you ever find yourself at the lobby of a high-end hotel in KL or dining in one of the restaurants, keep a close watch on your belongings.

Police recently busted a group of thieves who would pose as hotel guests to steal bags from either the hotel lobby or restaurants.

The gang, usually targeting only five-star hotels, would look for targets during the busy breakfast period.

Dang Wangi police chief Assistant Superintendent Mohd Sukri Kaman said police have so far caught six people from the gang, and are tracking down an Indonesian.

“The thieves would walk into the hotels between 6.30am and 10.30am, which when hotel guests are having their breakfast.

"The suspects would take the opportunity to grab the bags when they are left unattended," he told a press conference at Dang Wangi police station here today.

Sukri said following reports lodged on the thefts, an operation code-named ‘Op Bag’ was launched. Four Indonesians, including a woman, a Myanmar man and a Malaysian man were subsequently arrested.

Checks revealed the Malaysian man had served as the fence, buying electronics such as mobile phones and laptops from the group.

The operation saw 62 notes of various currencies, a bag, 47 mobile phones, four laptops and five tablets seized.

Sukri advised members of the public to be cautious and be mindful of their surroundings.

He also advised electronics shops not to purchase gadgets without checking on the ownership.
