'GBBO' contestant wins first Hollywood Handshake in bread week as mum asks 'what the hell is Bake Off?'

Great British Bake Off contestant Giuseppe has won the series' first Hollywood Handshake in the notoriously tough bread week - although his mum had no idea what the TV show was.

The bakers admitted to being terrified of taking on the challenges set by bread guru Paul Hollywood, but Italian contestant Giuseppe had nothing to worry about.

He excelled in the signature bake challenge to create a flavoured focaccia, so much so that Hollywood told him it was the sort of loaf he would have made himself - and then offered him the coveted handshake reserved for perfect bakes.

Bread expert Hollywood told him: "So this is your recipe and you must give it to me."

Giuseppe wiped away tears as he said: "I'm feeling quite emotional because I never thought I would get one. I was expecting a 'but' there."

The baker's focaccia recipe had raised eyebrows with the judges when he told them it contained milk, but as Prue Leith asked him if it was how his grandmother used to make it, he replied: "No, not at all, my grandmother used to buy her bread."

It seems Giuseppe is definitely the keenest baker in his family as after he called his mother to tell her he'd also won the technical challenge to make ciabatta, she admitted she had no idea what he was talking about.

Host Matt Lucas asked how his family felt about his bread week triumphs and he said: "My wife was very happy. When I told my mum, she was like, 'what the hell is Bake Off?'"

German baker Jurgen, whose creations usually rival Giuseppe's in the judging, did not have as strong a week after being named star baker two weeks in a row.

He chose to make a kipper-flavoured focaccia which fell flat with the judges, while Maggie also had a tough time with problems over texture and flavour in her focaccia and ciabatta loaves.

Although Scouse baker Lizzie had success with her bakes, she told presenter Noel Fielding that she was no fan of the week's theme.

He asked her whether she liked baking bread and she replied: "No. It's horrible. You don't know what it's thinking, do you?"
