The People’s Action Party on Friday unveiled candidates who will be contesting in Sembawang GRC in the coming General Election, and the slate includes fresh faces Amrin Amin and Ong Ye Kung.
The both of them will be contesting together with party chairman Khaw Boon Wan, eye surgeon Lim Wee Kiak and lawyer Vikram Nair. Retiring Minister of Parliament (MP) Ellen Lee will not be contesting in the coming GE.
Who is Amrin Amin?
He is a corporate lawyer at Joseph Tan Jude Benny LLP (JT JB). While he may be a new face in Singaporean politics, he has many experiences in community work.
The second child of four siblings has been active in grassroots work since 2004 starting in Chong Pang, Yishun in 2013.
He was the legislative assistant for Law Minister K. Shanmugam from 2004 to 2006 and contributes to mainly education and social causes.
He has served on the boards of the National Council of Problem Gambling and the Association of Muslim Professional’s “Ready for School” fund that helps underprivileged students with educational cost.
When he’s not working or serving the community, he enjoys watching movies, reading autobiographies and collecting newspapers during milestone events.
Meanwhile, Ong Ye Kung, 45, who is not new to Singapore politics, is a fresh face in the Sembawang GRC.
The deputy director of group strategy at Keppel Corporation, whose PAP team for Aljunied GRC lost to The Worker’s Party in 2011’s General Election, is back.
He used to be a deputy secretary-general for the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) and the chief executive officer of the Workforce Development Agency.
He is currently in the Boards of SMRT Corporation and Alexander Health Pte Ltd.
