GE2015: SDP's Chee Soon Juan to contest in GE

SDP candidates (L to R): Wong Souk Yee, Chee Soon Juan, Sadasivam Veriyah

Singapore Democratic Party Secretary-General Chee Soon Juan annnouced on Saturday (Aug 29) that he will contest in next month’s general election as he unveiled the party's last batch of candidates.

Chee last stood for election in 2001. He was unable to do so in 2006 and 2011 as he was a bankrupt after he lost in the defamation suits filed by ex-prime ministers the late Lee Kuan Yew and Goh Chok Tong against him and was unable to pay the damages.

At a media conference, Chee unveiled two other SDP candidates: Sadasivam Veriyah, an ex-teacher and unionist who contested in the 2011 election, and Wong Souk Yee, an ex-political detainee and playwright.

Chee said the SDP will only announce the constituencies that all its 11 candidates are contesting on Nomination Day, which is on 1 September 2015. The GE will be held on 11 September 2015.

The SDP had introduced eight other candidates earlier. They are Damanhuri Abas, an ex-director of Muhammadiyah Islamic College; Bryan Lim, hospital manager; John Tan, social psychologist and lecturer; Sidek Mallek, compliance auditor for a security firm; Paul Ananth Tambyah, professor of medicine at the National University of Singapore (NUS) and senior infectious diseases physician at the National University Hospital (NUH); Jaslyn Go Hui Leng, co-founder of a construction company; Chong Wai Fung, administrator of Ren Ci Nursing Home (Moulmein); and Khung Wai Yeen, accounts manager at a European MNC and a former navy regular.
