GE2015: Veteran PAP MP Charles Chong to contest Punggol East SMC

Joo Chiat MP Charles Chong will contest Punggol East SMC, the PAP announced in a media release Thursday.

Chong is a veteran PAP MP who was first elected to Parliament in 1988 and has served 6 terms. He was also chairman of Pasir Ris and Pasir Ris-Punggol Town Councils from 1997 to 2006.

This move confirms speculation that Chong would be fielded at Punggol East, currently represented by Workers' Party MP Lee Li Lian.

Lee won the seat at a by-election in 2013, where she went against the PAP's Dr Koh Poh Koon. The by-election was called after former MP and Speaker of Parliament Michael Palmer resigned following news of an extra-marital affair.
