GE2015 rallies: How to get there and where to eat (Central)

Your hawker food guide to the rallies: we start with the rally sites in Central Singapore.

10 parties, 46 sites and 8 days’ worth of political rallies — election excitement is certainly at its peak, as candidates make their causes heard to voters. All rallies, except the lunchtime rally, will run from 7pm to 10pm.

As you plan your routes to the respective rally sites, why not take the chance to visit some of the most popular hawker spots nearby. Of course, it’s far from an exhaustive list; think of it as a starting point for this yummy food journey. Do you have a personal favourite, from these picks?

Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC
Venue 1: Bishan Stadium, 7 Bishan Street 14 (Bishan MRT)
Park at: Bishan Stadium/ Sports Complex

Eat at: Hawker must-tries closest to the stadium include Ming Kee Chicken Rice and Porridge at 511 Bishan Street 13. Its unique selling point: the chicken is soaked in ice water once it has been cooked, to keep the meat tender and succulent.

If you’ve the time, travel further down towards Shunfu Mart Food Centre at 320 Shunfu Road. Popular stalls known by name include Mei Zhen Hakka Delicacies (for its Hakka-style soon kueh, yong tau fu), Lai Heng Fried Kway Teow, Fu Shi Traditional Roasted (popular for its roast meats).

Or head over to Sembawang Hills Food Centre at 590 Upper Thomson Rd for duck rice, fried kway teow, curry puffs and popiah.

Venue 2: Toa Payoh Stadium, 297 Lorong 6 Toa Payoh (Toa Payoh MRT)
Park at: Toa Payoh Stadium/ Sports Hall

Eat at: Kim Keat Palm Food Centre at 22 Lorong 7 Toa Payoh, a hawker centre with stall owners that have been in business for decades. Top picks include fishball noodles, oyster omelette, popiah and beef noodles.

One of the stalls (Hai Nan Xing Zhou Beef Noodles) has been around for over 60 years and was awarded the ‘Most Authentic/ Traditional Hawker Stall Award’ at the seventh City Hawker Food Hunt organised by Chinese newspaper Shin Min Daily News and City Gas in 2014.

Lunchtime rally
Venue: From 12 noon to 2 pm at Promenade area beside UOB Plaza (Raffles Place MRT)
Park at: UOB Plaza, One Raffles Place, Six Battery Road carparks

Eat at: Popular hawker centres in the area include Maxwell Food Centre at 1 Kadayanallur St (popular stalls include Tian Tian chicken rice, Zhen Zhen porridge, Jin Hua Sliced Fish Bee Hoon) and Amoy Food Centre at 7 Maxwell Road (Hainanese beef noodles, char kway teow, nasi padang, hor fun and even Singapore-style ‘ramen’).

MacPherson SMC
Venue: Field bounded by PIE, Paya Lebar Road and Circuit Road (MacPherson MRT)
Park at: MacPherson Gardens Multi Storey Carpark

Eat at: Kin Kin Chili Pan Mee at 534 MacPherson Road. The Kuala Lumpur hawker chain opened its first stall here just last year. Its signature dish: a bowl of chewy noodles covered with ground chili and paired with meatballs, minced meat and a runny half-boiled egg.

Potong Pasir SMC
Venue: Field opposite Blk 120 Potong Pasir Avenue 1 (Potong Pasir MRT)
Park at: Carpark at Sorby Adams Drive

Eat at: The River South (Hoe Nam) Prawn Noodles at 31 Tai Thong Crescent, which is open ‘til 4.30pm and Zheng Yi Hainanese Beef Noodles at 47 Tai Thong Crescent. Both stalls are closed on Mondays. The beef noodle stall was crowned as one of six Singapore Hawker Masters by local newspaper the Straits Times last year.

Radin Mas SMC
Venue: Delta Hockey Pitch, 900 Tiong Bahru Road (Redhill MRT)
Park at: Delta Sports Complex, Delta Hockey Pitch carparks, Hendersonville HDB Multi Storey Carpark

Eat at: Redhill Market and Food Centre at 85 Redhill Lane, about 5 minutes’ walk away from the rally site. Join the queues for satay bee hoon, chicken rice, kwap chup and other local favourites.

Holland-Bukit Timah GRC
Where: Field along Commonwealth Ave, beside Commonwealth MRT Station and Field in front of Blk 204 Clementi Avenue 6

Eat at: Two Chefs Eating Place at 116 Commonwealth Crescent for zi char dishes. The butter pork ribs in particular, is its signature dish — the zi char stall covers its pork ribs with condensed milk powder that’s been fried with butter. Do expect to queue if you’ve not made a reservation in advance, according to user reviews on food review sites Openrice and Hungrygowhere.

If you’ve time to spare, travel towards Ghim Moh Food Centre at 20 Ghim Moh Road for its thosai, hor fun, roast meats, chwee kueh (steamed rice cakes topped with radish).

Jalan Besar GRC
Venue 1: Field in front of Blk 4 Boon Keng Road (Boon Keng or Bendemeer MRT)
Park at: Boon Keng or Bendemeer Light HDB Multi Storey carpark

Eat at: Head down to Golden Mile Food Centre at 505 Beach Road, a popular hawker haunt in the area. Most diners will make a beeline for the stalls for claypot rice, fishball noodles,chicken rice and soup tulang (mutton or beef bones stewed in a sweet-spicy soup).

If you’ve the time, head over to Sungei Road Laksa at 27 Jalan Berseh. The stall’s laksa broth has been cooked over a charcoal fire in the two decades that it has been in business. Celebrity chef Andre Chiang of Restaurant Andre is among its fans.

Venue 2: Field opposite Blk 16 Jalan Tenteram (Boon Keng or Potong Pasir MRT)
Park at: Jalan Tenteram or Tenteram Peak HDB Multi Storey carpark

Eat at: Bendemeer Market & Food Centre at 29 Bendemeer Road. Popular picks include Hainanese curry chicken rice, crispy fried you tiao, carrot cake and wanton mee.

Tanjong Pagar GRC
Venue: Queenstown Stadium, 473A Stirling Road and Sports field in front of Ministry of Education, 21 Evans Road (Queenstown)
Park at: Queenstown Stadium carpark

Eat at: Mei Ling Market and Food Centre at 159 Mei Ling Street, which was built as early as 1969. Steamboat and zi char dishes, carrot cake and chicken rice are among some of the top finds. Some hawkers from the now-demolished Commonwealth Food Centre including Sin Kee Famous Chicken Rice have also moved to this hawker centre.

The ABC Brickworks Market and Food Centre at 6 Jalan Bukit Merah is another foodie destination in the area. Popular stalls include Fatty Cheong char siew, Wild Wild West Western Food and Jin Jin Hot Cold Dessert.
