GE2015 rallies: How to get there and where to eat (East)

Your hawker food guide to this year’s election rally sites in the east.

If you would often travel for food, why not supplement your rally experience with popular foodie destinations in the East. Be there extra early and plan your route around some of these stops on your way to the rally.

While these hawker stalls were selected based on their popularity and proximity to the allocated rally venues, you’ll still need some time to get to and fro between these sites.

Do expect traffic congestion as well, since selected lanes will be closed. A matter of luck might still be required; some stalls are known for their notoriously irregular hours too.

Marine Parade GRC
Venue 1: Field opposite Blk 344 Ubi Avenue 1 (Eunos MRT)
Park at: Blk 344 Ubi Avenue 1 carpark and Excalibur Centre carpark

Venue 2: Field in front of Blk 33 Eunos Crescent (Eunos MRT)
Park at: Eunos HDB Multi Storey Carpark

Eat at: 881 Hong Kong Street Chun Tat Kee is just a 5-minute bus ride away at 1 Lorong J Telok Kurau. The hawker stall is known for its XO Fish Head Bee Hoon and san luo hor fun (hor fun cooked with sliced fish and clear gravy)

Head further down towards Joo Chiat Road for Fei Fei Wanton Mee, Eng Seng Restaurant (a zi char coffeeshop known for its crab dishes) and more popular local foodie options in between rows of shophouses.

Mountbatten SMC
Venue: Sports field bounded by Stadium Drive and Stadium Boulevard (Stadium MRT)
Park at: 6 Stadium Boulevard, 52 Stadium Road carparks

Eat at: Old Airport Road Market and Food Centre at 19 Airport Road. This popular hawker centre is known for its banana fritters, chee cheong fun, hokkien noodles, fried kway teow and prawn noodles, just to name a few.

Fengshan SMC
Venue: Field beside SBS Transit Bedok North Bus Park, Bedok North Avenue 4, near Simpang Bedok (Simei MRT)
Park at: Car Park Eastlink Light Industrial Factory or Changi Hospital

Eat at: Get there early and bus over to try the ‘orh luak’ (fried oyster egg), bak chor mee and other hawker treats at Fengshan Market & Food Centre on 85 Bedok North Street 4. Yes, that same hawker centre that Workers’ Party chairman Sylvia Lim had visited and Instagram-ed.

East Coast GRC
Venue: Bedok Stadium, 1 Bedok North Street 2 (Bedok MRT)
Park at: Bedok Stadium/ Sports Hall

Eat at: The new Bedok Interchange Food Centre at 208B New Upper Changi Road. Opened in October 2014, the hawker centre houses most of the stalls previously located at the 207 Bedok Central food centre. Make a visit soon, to see if the hawkers live up to the hype of its previous location.

Venue: Field in front of Blk 155 Simei Road (Simei MRT)
Park at: Simei HDB Multi Storey carpark or 160 Simei Road carpark

Eat at: Changi Village Food Centre at 2 Changi Village Road is another popular hawker spot, known for beef noodles, nasi lemak, barbecued seafood among other local favourites.

Tampines GRC
Venue 1: Field in front of Blk 895A Tampines Street 81 (Tampines MRT)
Park at: 894A Tampines Street 81, Tampines Greenterrace and Tampines HDB Multi Storey carparks

Venue 2: Field of Ngee Ann Secondary School, 1 Tampines Street 32 (Tampines MRT)
Park at: Tampines HDB Multi Storey carpark or 385 Tampines Street 32 carpark

Eat at: Tampines Round Market at 137A Tampines Street 11. Popular finds include Ming Kee Fuzhou Fish Balls, Hai Chang Fish Head Steamboat and Sarawak-style kolo mee (egg noodles with wanton, char siew, minced noodle and tossed with oil).
