The People’s Action Party held a rally for the East Coast Group Representation Constituency (GRC) at Bedok Stadium on Thursday night (3 Sep), addressing issues ranging from education, low-income families to the influx of foreign workers.

Manpower Minister Lim Swee Say (photo above), who is anchoring the PAP team for the GRC, said he and his fellow candidates champion “taking care of residents” as well as “giving ample opportunities to residents for a bright future.” Areas under East Coast GRC include Bedok, Simei, Changi, Siglap and Chai Chee.

Lee Yi Shyan assured voters that the PAP will help residents enrol in subsidised courses to improve their skill sets. “We hope everyone will develop a habit of lifelong learning,” he said.

Jessica Tan read out an email from a polytechnic student, whom she had helped to secure a place in her desired course a couple of years ago. Since then, the student has scored a perfect Grade Point Average (GPA), underlining the care that PAP has for residents, Tan said.

Maliki Osman emphasised the importance of paying attention to low-income families, saying they “are as much Singaporeans as any of us”. He added, “This (issue) has been dear to my heart. I cannot see a low income family not being supported. I want to help them, because I was once one of them.”

Speaking in Chinese, Lim addressed the hot topic of foreign worker influx in Singapore. While he stressed the importance of having foreign workers, especially for local small- and medium-sized enterprises, he assured Singaporeans that the PAP government will continue to carefully manage the inflow of foreign workers.

After the rally, Maliki mingled with supporters who were carrying banners and LED signs that read “I Heart Maliki”.

Many supporters came dressed in white, the party’s colour, and sat at one section of the stadium. Six residents from various places living in the GRC gave speeches before the candidates arrived.
