GE2020 ballot papers to be burnt 16 January: ELD
SINGAPORE — All sealed boxes containing ballot papers and other documents used in the 2020 General Election will be destroyed this Saturday (16 January), said the Elections Department on Tuesday.
This is in accordance with the Parliamentary Elections Act (Chapter 218), which states that ballot papers and other documents used in an election shall be sealed and retained in safe custody for a period of six months, after which they shall be destroyed unless otherwise directed by order of the President. This is to ensure the secrecy of the vote.
The sealed boxes, which are being stored at the the Supreme Court, will be transported to the Tuas South incineration plant to be incinerated. Safe management measures, including limiting the number of representatives from political parties who can be present to witness the proceedings, will be implemented during the proceedings at both locations.
Separately, a ballot box containing a copy of the register of electors for polling district PN23 of Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC will be opened at the Supreme Court. The register had been accidentally sealed in the box and will be retrieved for the purpose of preparing the list of electors in PN23 who did not vote at the election, said ELD.
