The local arm for the Chinese automotive manufacturer Geely admitted that 2020 was not a sight for sore eyes. Being in the automotive sector, they witnessed the industry suffer from massive sales declines, layoffs and even closures.
The hard-reset on the country’s economic system posed a great challenge to keep the businesses survive— a far look from the skyrocketing numbers that they were looking at prior to the saddening experience.
Still, Geely Philippines received some good news with all the milestones that they have achieved despite the overwhelming odds.
Without revealing figures, Geely Philippines sales gained traction, delivering sales targets in most months. Aside from that, the Geely Coolray managed to hit an impressive feat after being the top-selling model in the five-seater subcompact crossover division for three months since June 2020.
Despite their aggressive expansion plans stalling due to the country’s lockdown restrictions, they have managed to open six more outlets to boost sales and service. Aside from the maiden dealership outlet in North Edsa, Geely was able to put up dealerships in Quezon Avenue, Cagayan de Oro, Lipa, Zamboanga, General Santos, and Imus, Cavite while expressing gratitude over the trust and confidence given by business partners.
According to them, they are adding 21 more in key markets this year.
SGAP President and CEO Mikihisa Takayama said that hampered economy made them more driven to present their products to the local market.
“Geely is definitely starting the year right coming from an illustrious performance last year. Apart from our customers, the awards and recognitions we have received for the past year are our driving force to do better this year. This means a lot to us as we build our name in the industry and strive to be a major player in the market amid an economic downturn”, Takayama was quoted as saying.
“We want to keep our eyes on the bright spots amid the pandemic and other future challenges this year may bring us. I personally think that ‘quality, affordability, and customer delight’ should be instilled in businesses during the crisis. This period of decline in our economy is a good time to prove to our customers the quality and efficiency our brand could offer without having to burden them too much financially. It has been a week since we welcomed the year with high hopes that 2021 will be a lot better for us. Let us all move forward together”, Takayama added.
To note, even the global corporation is readying for industry’s re-emerging from the disaster-riddled 2020.
Back in November 2020, Geely Automobile International Corporation Deputy General Manager Jenny Jin said that they will be bringing a sedan this coming April—to which we started to speculate will be the Geely Emgrand. The speculation came as Autochina, then distributor of Geely vehicles, previously brought the Emgrand nameplate, alongside full-size EC8 full size sedan and the EX7 mid-size sports utility vehicle (SUV).
