Gentle Bones Opens for Capital, Zouk’s Ultra-Lux Whisky and Cigar Bar

Some hearts were broken when Zouk announced that Velvet Underground will not be reopening at their home in Clarke Quay. In place to mend those broken hearts is Capital, a luscious lounge catered to the discerning crowd that savours whisky, rum and fine cigars.

From entry-level whisky at $16 a pop, to a bottle of $36,000 Dalmore Constellation 1971 Cask 2, erudite whiskey connoisseurs will be spoilt for choice.

Art is one of the concepts that runs through Zouk’s fourth new establishment. Along the side of the cigar lounge is a “cabinet of curiosities” curated by The Artling.

Our favourite pick of the lot is Philip Low’s geometric acrylic structure that refracts the infinite possibilities of light. There’s even a commissioned piece by leading Japanese contemporary heavyweight Tetsuya Toshima adorning the iridescent ceiling of Capital’s island bar.

Over the last few years, many have lamented that Zouk became a playground for ‘kids’. They hear you! The minimum age for entry into Capital has been raised to 25 for males and 21 for females, an enclave for the well-heeled to mix and mingle.

Musically, Zouk continues to stay true to its rich music heritage. Zouk’s resident DJs will helm the decks from Thursdays to Saturdays, with an additional touch of live jazz and acoustic electronic beats by Kaye (Darker than Wax) and Munir. It provides a soothing respite for worker bees who need to kick back from work.

Further, it is a welcome step that local female DJs will be given a platform to spin every Friday as the electronic music industry is notoriously male-dominated.

Adding to the fun of this Friday’s launch is 23-year-old Gentle Bones who has recently dropped his soulful new single “White Noise”. Despite the rigidity of Singapore’s education system, Gentle Bones successfully carved out a full-time music career, signed on to international music label Universal Music and was even featured in Forbes’ 30 under 30 Asia list last year.
