"Geran" selected for film festival in New York

21 Feb – This year, "Geran" receives the honour of representing Malaysia at a prestigious film festival in New York.

The drama film, helmed by Areel Abu Bakar, has been selected as the Official Selection of the 19th New York Asian Film Festival (NYAFF), as revealed in a FINAS Facebook post.

With a cast made up of Namron, Fatimah Abu Bakar, Khoharullah, Feiyna Tajudin, Aeril Zafrel, Megat Shahrizal and more, the movie follows the story of three siblings, Ali, Fatimah and Mat Arip, the latter who is supposed to come home with the grant (geran) of their inherited land but fails to do so. This forces Ali to go look for him and bring him home to their father, Pak Nayan.

The movie also incorporates the Malay martial art, silat, in its storyline.

Prior to "Geran", previous titles that have represented Malaysia at NYAFF include "One Two Jaga", "Fly by Night" and "Walk with Me".

The 19th NYAFF is taking place in its namesake American city from 3 to 16 July 2020.
