While there are a few items in our kitchens that we could probably ditch without too much trouble (really, how often do you actually use your spiralizer?), one thing’s for sure: you won't regret spending on a good pan set.

These hardworking staples see heavy daily use, withstanding repeated blasts at high temperatures and the odd burnt-on mishap, so it pays to invest in something that will last. Just consider the cost-per-use! What's more, properly designed pans will ensure food is cooked evenly and properly, leading to tastier dishes overall, too.

If you’ve chosen well, your pan set should last you years. But if the non-stick has started to peel, the base has warped or they’re simply looking a little too worse-for-wear, then it’s probably time to retire them.

Over the last couple of years, the GHI has tested over 30 pans on the market to find the best of the sets. They check a variety of materials, including the likes of aluminium, copper and stainless steel among others, on ceramic, gas and induction hobs. The winner impressed across all categories, topping the charts with a near-perfect score of 96/100.

The Zyliss Cook Ultimate 3 Piece Saucepan Set is made up of 16cm, 18cm and 20cm aluminium saucepans – perfect for tackling everything from sauces and soups up to bigger batches of meals like chilli or bolognese. While they’re not included, the GHI has also tested the brand’s frying pan and grill pan (scoring 91 and 98 respectively) if you want to complete your collection.

Testers raved about these pans. They’re lightweight and comfortable to manoeuvre, with an even heat distribution across the base and faultless non-stick. Whether using induction, gas or ceramic hobs, they were well balanced and remained firmly in place during use. A spell in the oven saw no damage to the handle, lid or fittings, either.

There weren’t really any negatives. The team did note that induction hob users may have to wait a little longer to start cooking than those using ceramic or gas, as mince and onions took a little more time to caramelise. Plus, while they are dishwasher safe, our GHI team doesn’t recommend it. After a few runs, the plastic sealant between the handle and the pot peeled off – although, admittedly, this didn’t have any bearing on the pans’ performance.

These pans are available on Lakeland for £119 – a very reasonable price considering the 10-year guarantee and near-flawless performance. We’ll certainly be making some space for this set in our kitchen cupboards. Snap them up here.
