Giant WWII bomb explodes while being defused
The biggest World War Two bomb ever found off Poland exploded under water on Tuesday (October 13) as navy divers tried to defuse it.
It weighed in at nearly 5,400 kg, with nearly half of that being explosives.
More than 750 people had been evacuated from the area near the Piast Canal in northwest Poland where the Tallboy bomb used by Britain's Royal Air Force was found.
It was dropped close to the end of the war in an allied attack on a German cruiser.
Following the explosion, Second-Lieutenant Grzegorz Lewandowski of the 8th Coastal Defense Flotilla told state news that all divers had returned from the danger zone.
He said the object could be considered as neutralized and gave assurances it would not pose any further threat.
