A 10-year-old girl has been charged with killing a six-month-old baby boy at a daycare centre.

Police in Chippewa County, Wisconsin, said the girl dropped the baby then stomped on his head.

The girl appeared in court on Monday and was charged with first-degree intentional homicide.

Accompanied by her parents, she wept throughout the 10-minute proceedings.

She is being held on a $50,000 cash bond.

A caretaker at a daycare facility in the town of Wheaton called the sheriff’s department last Tuesday to say a six-month-old boy was bleeding from the head and was unresponsive.

He was taken to a local hospital before being flown to Gillette Children’s Hospital in St Paul, Minnesota, where he died on Nov 1.

Police questioned one adult and three children who were at the daycare centre.

Chippewa County Sheriff James Kowalczyk said the 10-year-old girl had been holding the baby when she dropped him. He hit his head on a footstool and cried, the sheriff said.

He said that when the baby cried, the girl panicked and stomped on his head.

The sheriff said a doctor who examined the baby found that his injuries were not accidental.

Authorities said the girl had been removed from the home of her biological parents, who were with her in court, in September.

She had been placed in foster care with the family that runs the daycare centre.
