GMA News SciTech editor bags DOST Gawad Scriba Award

TJ Dimacali, GMA News Online's Science and Technology Editor, was conferred the Gawad Scriba Award for Science Communicators in the Cyber category by Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Sec. Mario G. Montejo at an official ceremony in Pasay City on July 27.

Formerly known as the DOST Media Award, the Gawad Scriba is annually bestowed on communicators in print, radio, and cyber media who have staunchly advocated the promotion of Philippine science and technology.

Other awardees this year were Malaya's Paul M. Icamina for the Print category; Dr. Custer Deocaris for Radio; and Donna May Flavier for Television.

Special citations were also given to the Business Mirror "in appreciation of their unceasing support and extensive coverage of Science and Technology events and activities"; and to Ronald M. Henson "in appreciation of and profound gratitude for his book 'Popularizing Science thru Mass Media' in a simple yet informative manner that appeals to a wide audience especially in science reporting."

"I have always believed that science is an important part of our everyday lives, and that it's our responsibility as science journalists to communicate the awesome realization of that truth," Dimacali said.

The awarding ceremonies capped the annual National Science and Technology Week, held at the SMX Mall of Asia from July 23 to 27. With the theme, “Science, Technology and Innovation: The Road to a Smarter Philippines,” the event showcased the latest innovations and developments from the local scientific community.

Among the highlights of the week-long expo were the DOST's Advanced Materials Testing Laboratory (ADMATEL) for semiconductors; the Automated Guideway Transit (AGT) alternative transport system for Metro Manila; the Certified Seed Production Program; and the locally-designed Mobile Operational System for Emergency Services (MOSES) tablet for real-time weather information. — DVM, GMA News
