Gmail to roll out pop-up 'Compose mail' window

Users of Gmail, Google's free email service, can now save time with a new feature that allows an email being composed to pop up as a separate window. Gmail product manager Phil Sharp said the completely redesigned compose and reply windows will make Gmail faster and easier to use. "How many times have you been writing an email and had to reference something in another message? Saving a draft, opening the old email, and then reopening your draft wastes valuable minutes. The new compose pops up in a window, just like chats (only larger)," Sharp said in a blog post. He said the new feature makes it easy to reference other emails without ever having to close the draft mail. "The new compose is designed to let you focus on what's important: your message. The controls are still there when you need them but get out of the way when you don’t. We’ve even added some new features like the ability to easily insert inline images and have more to come," he added. A Gmail user can even do a search or keep an eye on new mail as it comes in, Sharp said. Best of all, he said a Gmail user can "write multiple messages at once and minimize a message to finish it later." On the other hand, Sharp said composing the mail will be easier with profile pictures of contacts and autocomplete to help find the right person faster. The new address chips can also be dragged and dropped among the To, Cc, and Bcc fields. "When you’re done adding recipients, the address area collapses automatically to get out of your way," Sharp said. A similar experience awaits a Gmail user when responding to a message, he said. — BM, GMA News
