The first official rendition of God Save the king was sung at St Paul’s Cathedral at the end of a memorial service for the Queen on Friday.

The lyrics to the national anthem were changed from “Queen” to “King” and “her victorious” to “him victorious” to mark that the King had taken over as the new monarch.

It came after crowds spontaneously sang the new version of the song outside Buckingham Palace as Charles arrived with the Queen Consort.

He automatically became the King following the death of the Queen on Thursday, but the Accession Council attended by privy councillors on Saturday morning at the State Apartments of St James’s Palace confirmed his role.
