  • The Good Doctor season 3 episode 8 aired on ABC on Monday night.

  • At the end of the episode, titled "Moonshot," Dr. Neil Melendez and Dr. Audrey Lim seemed to break up.

  • Fans of The Good Doctor weren't happy with this storyline update and began calling out the writers on Twitter.

Ever since Dr. Neil Melendez (Nicholas Gonzalez) and Dr. Audrey Lim (Christina Chang) started their relationship in The Good Doctor season 2, they've faced all sorts of challenges in the workplace. As soon as they went public with their romance, Dr. Lim was promoted to Chief of Surgery at St. Bonaventure, after all. The promotion made her Dr. Melendez's boss, and it became necessary for them to "officially break up" (a.k.a. pretend to break up) in front of HR before continuing their relationship in secret.

Of course, things have only gotten trickier from there, with the issue of objectivity in their professional relationship coming up again and again in The Good Doctor season 3. Finally, though, at the end of episode 8 on Monday, the couple decided it was all getting to be too much for them.

"I don't think I can give you the unconditional support you deserve from a partner and the objectivity you need from a chief," Dr. Lim told Dr. Melendez in the last few minutes of the episode. "And I don't want to give up on my dream. I love you, but it's not enough."

Understandably, fans were deeply upset by the breakup — so much so, in fact, that they took to Twitter to call out the writers for what they seemed to think was a major storyline mistake.

"HOW DARE YOU GUYS MAKE MY HEART BREAK 😭💔 Tears are falling, and falling HARD 😭," one fan tweeted. "When you find 2 actors with great on screen chemistry you have found a rare and beautiful couple that keeps your audience watching. Writer's [sic] please do not make this into a soap opera," another fan wrote.

One viewer even speculated that the show's writers might be ending Dr. Melendez's relationship with Dr. Lim in order to open the door for him to start a relationship with resident Dr. Claire Browne. It's an idea that's been thrown around by fans for a while now (since season 1, to be precise), but certainly not one that every fan is interested in seeing played out in the show:

Still, we can't be completely sure that Dr. Melendez and Dr. Lim are done for good ... but we'll have to wait for future episodes of The Good Doctor to find out.
