Good Morning Britain made a rather unexpected change to its Lorraine Kelly segment today (March 31), leaving viewers rather confused.

Earlier this month, ITV announced that Lorraine would join GMB for the last hour of the show between 9am and 10am, as part of daytime schedule changes to keep staff numbers down during the coronavirus pandemic.

Previously, Piers has stayed on with Lorraine to co-present the last hour of the show, but that wasn't the case today.

Instead, Piers packed up early and left with co-host Susanna Reid – who returned to the programme today after her period of self-isolation – leaving Lorraine to front the morning show on her own.

Confused by the sudden change in format, one viewer wrote: "Hang on... Lorraine had to present her program with Morgan whilst Reid was off. Now Reid is back and Lorraine gets to host on her own. Very weird."

Another tweeted: "How is it that while Susanna was away u stayed on with Lorraine but now Susanna’s back you are not on with Lorraine ?? What’s that about ??"

In a statement, ITV previously announced that Lorraine and Loose Women had been temporarily cancelled as a result of the coronavirus outbreak, while GMB had been extended by an hour.

"ITV Daytime has taken the decision to stop broadcasting Lorraine and Loose Women live from Monday, March 23," the statement read. "This decision has been made to minimise the number of staff travelling in and out of our studios and working together on shift at any one time.

"We're focusing our efforts on providing to viewers the latest news on the rapidly changing situation which aims to offer some stability and continuity in all our lives whilst so many of us are at home right now.

"That's why we have taken this tough decision to protect our GMB news programme in the morning and keep This Morning on air for as long as possible."

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
