Gotze is the best German footballer - Figo

The 25-year-old has finally rejoined his team-mates on the field after enduring a difficult rehab from a metabolic disorder

Portugal icon Luis Figo has named Borussia Dortmund's Mario Gotze the best German footballer.

What has happened to Thomas Muller?

Gotze's career has taken something of a nosedive since his decision to leave Dortmund for Bayern Munich back in 2013, with his recent return to Signal Iduna Park seen as unwelcome by pockets of the BVB faithful.

Fans haven't been the 24-year-old's only issue, however, as he continues to struggle for form and game time under Thomas Tuchel.

Figo, however, speaking in an interview with Bild, singled out the ostracised attacking midfielder as the best his country has to offer.

“Götze is the best German footballer,” Figo said.

“He has such an incredible talent and can do everything with the ball.

Shocking stat exposes missing Messi

“That he missed the [Champions League] game against Benfica was good for Lisbon.

“For me he is a player with great ability. I like him a lot.”

Dortmund's 1-0 loss in Lisbon on Tuesday night means they must make up the difference in Germany, while they sit in fourth in the Bundesliga with the league title now looking out of reach.
