Long Line at Polling Station as Newsom Defeats Recall Attempt

Democrat Gavin Newsom defeated a Republican-led recall attempt and held on to his position as governor of California on Tuesday, September 14.

By late Tuesday night and with over 60 percent of ballots counted, Newsom was ahead by a 2-to-1 margin, according to reports.

Newsom thanked voters for keeping him in office and for voting for “science”, “women’s rights”, “the environment” and against “cynicism and bigotry”.

Footage by Steve Sabicer shows a long line of people waiting to vote at a polling station in Claremont on Tuesday.

“That’s the line to vote and it keeps going all the way around the basketball court and the parking lot is full. That’s democracy,” Sabicer can be heard saying. Credit: Steve Sabicer via Storyful
