As fun as it is to drink a fancy-pants cocktail, it also requires a fully stocked bar cart and—usually—a pretty involved recipe. Instead of worrying about shaking or stirring, we offer you the grapefruit radler. It’s as easy to make as it is to crack open a cold beer.
What’s a radler, you ask? Well, it’s like a shandy (a 50:50 mix of beer and lemonade). The name is actually German for “cyclist,” because in the 1920s a German innkeeper resorted to blending his beer with sparkling lemonade to keep up with the demand of thousands of cyclists stopping at his establishment along the trail…or so the story goes.
You can use any wheat beer you like (such as Weihenstephan Hefeweissbier or the Belgian-style Blue Moon), and the recipe can be easily scaled up with a few more bottles. Cheers!
Servings: 1 serving
½ cup grapefruit juice
2 teaspoons sugar
1 bottle wheat beer (such as Blue Moon)
Grapefruit wedge, for garnish
1. In a tall glass, add the grapefruit juice and sugar, and mix to combine.
2. Top with the beer and garnish with a wedge of grapefruit before serving.
