Will The Great British Bake Off be cancelled this year?

From Good Housekeeping

Understandably, many events have had to be cancelled this year. Glastonbury, Wimbledon, The Olympics and many others have all announced that they will not be going ahead to ensure the safety of visitors and participants during these troubling times. But could coronavirus also be a reason for The Great British Bake Off to not go ahead in 2020?

Despite the fact that Bake Off doesn’t air until August, filming usually starts in April and finishes in July according to the 'Rules of Entry' section on the GBBO application website. And seeing as there is no sign of the UK’s lockdown rules becoming more relaxed any time soon, a tent full of bakers, presenters, judges and crew is simply not an option.

And a spokesperson confirmed to Delish that they have delayed the filming of the show.

“We continue to monitor the situation and follow the advice of Public Health England and we will delay filming on The Great British Bake Off until it is safe to proceed.”

So, in short, filming has been postponed, but for how long, is still unknown. And whether the show will actually be able to go ahead at all, still hasn’t been confirmed. It may still return to our screens at the same time as usual, skip a year completely, or just air later on in the year, but until we hear from the horse’s mouth, aka Channel 4 itself, we won't know for sure. So watch this space.

This series was set to be Matt Lucas’ debut as co-host with Noel Fielding after Sandi Toksvig decided to leave. She announced she was stepping back as Bake Off host in January.

In a statement on her Twitter, Sandi revealed that she was leaving GBBO so she could concentrate on other projects.

Matt said about joining Bake Off: “I’m chuffed to bits to be joining the most delicious show on television. I can’t wait to break bread with Noel, Prue and Paul and meet the brilliant bakers. And bearing in mind my love of cake, I’ve already ordered some much larger trousers in anticipation. See you in the tent!”
