Group lodges police report against Rafizi over claims of corrupt Syariah court judges

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia Syariah Officers' Association has lodged a police report against PKR vice president Rafizi Ramli today for allegedly insulting the Syariah legal institution and courts.

Its Federal Territory Syariah court chief Judge Datuk Mahammad Ibrahim, who represented the association, said Rafizi has made a baseless accusation by claiming that bribery cases among syariah court judges were higher than that of the civil court judges.

He said Rafizi had made the statement during a mock parliamentary sitting, last month.

"If we look at graft cases among judges, only one syariah court judge was arrested because of such case. Rafizi's slanderous statement had insulted and tarnished the image of the syariah court institution," he told reporters outside of the police headquarters.

Also present were Federal Territory syarie chief prosecutor Ibrahim Deris, Malaysia Muslim Lawyers Association president Datuk Zainul Rijal Abu Bakar, and the association's lawyer Datuk Mohd Haziq Pillay.

Mahammad said Rafizi also claimed that the implementation of the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act (RUU355) would open the door for bribery and abuse of power among syariah court judges because there will be no salary increment for the judges.

He said Rafizi's statement had damaged the reputation of the institution in the eyes of the public.
