Guillermo del Toro could direct 'Fantastic Voyage' remake

Guillermo del Toro is reportedly poised to step in as director on James Cameron's "Fantastic Voyage" remake

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro is in talks to direct the remake of the classic sci-fi adventure "Fantastic Voyage," which is being produced by James Cameron.

The "Avatar" director has been working on production of a revamped version of the sci-fi classic -- originally directed by Richard Fleischer in 1966 -- since all the way back in 2010. When first embarking on the project, James Cameron envisaged updating the story by removing it from its original Cold War context, while also adding 3D technology to the mix.

James Cameron was initially in talks to sign up Paul Greengrass ("The Bourne Ultimatum ") as director. French director Louis Leterrier and Shawn Levy have since been linked to the project too. There was even word of Hugh Jackman and Will Smith starring in the movie.

The arrival of Guillermo del Toro should help get the film back on track, as all has been quiet since 2011. The Mexican filmmaker has been on the lookout for a new project since production of "Pacific Rim 2" was halted. "Fantastic Voyage" could be his next big-screen release, following "Crimson Peak" from October 2015.

Specialist superhero screenwriter David Goyer (the "Batman" trilogy, "Man of Steel", "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice") has been tasked with updating the tale, which follows a group of scientists who find themselves being shrunk and injected into a man's body on a high-risk mission to save his life.
