Gwyneth Paltrow jokes about 'Contagion' as she wears $100 face mask on a plane: 'I've already been in this movie'

Gwyneth Paltrow already starred in Contagion, the 2011 film about a global pandemic, and — spoiler alert — it wasn't a great outcome for her character. The actress isn't trying to have life imitate art amid the coronavirus outbreak. Paltrow, 47, shared a photo of herself wearing a face mask on a plane to Paris.

"Paranoid? Prudent? Panicked? Placid? Pandemic? Propaganda? Paltrow’s just going to go ahead and sleep with this thing on the plane," she wrote on Instagram Wednesday. "I’ve already been in this movie."

Of course, Paltrow isn't sporting a run of the mill surgical mask. The Politician star is wearing an Airinum contraption that costs over $100 after shipping. (Even if you wanted to splurge for one, they are sold out.)

According to the website, the mask "is tested in world-class Swedish laboratory (RICE) with equivalent results of the American N95 or European FFP2 filter performance test." It filters the following particles: "PM 0.3-10, dust and other air pollutants, pollen and other allergens, bacteria and other germs and wildfire smoke and other fumes."

While that may seem like a very on-brand face mask for the Goop founder, Paltrow also did her research. The Food and Drug Administration described N95 masks as a "protective device" designed for "very efficient filtration" of the coronavirus' airborne particles. Purvi Parikh, MD, a pediatric allergist and infectious disease specialist at NYU Langone Health, told Yahoo Lifestyle regular paper surgical masks are "not terribly effective."

That's unfortunate news for Kate Hudson. The actress also shared a selfie of her wearing a face mask on a recent trip — but it was the paper kind.

Hudson joked about it in the comment section of Paltrow's photo.

"At least you have the right mask!!!" she wrote, with an eye-rolling emoji.
