Hadi files defamation suit in UK against Clare Rewcastle-Brown

ALOR STAR: Pas president Datuk Seri Abd Hadi Awang has initiated defamation proceedings against Sarawak Report founder and editor Clare Rewcastle-Brown at the Queen’s Justice Division High Court in London on April 21.

Pas secretary-general Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan said the legal suit was filed by Hadi's lawyer, Carter-Ruck at the Queen’s Justice Division High Court on April 21.

Takiyuddin said Hadi is seeking damages including aggregated damages, for libel in respect of words published by the defendant in an article titled ‘As Najib Denies All Over 1MDB, Let’s Not Forget His Many Other Criminal Connections – COMMENT’.

Hadi is also seeking an injunction to refrain the defendant from publishing the same or similar article and other relief.

Takiyuddin said Brown, had in the article, published a false report alleging Hadi had received or accept or agree to accept a large bribe from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak as an exchange for him to compromise Pas' political stand against him.

“The defamation proceeding was filed after Brown failed to respond to a letter of complaint submitted by Abdul Hadi late last year.

"He had asked Brown to remove and apologise for the wrongly written article published on Aug 6, 2016,” he said in a press conference at the sidelines of the Pas 63rd annual delegates assembly here today.

Present was Hadi's political secretary Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar.

Takiyuddin said instead of responding to the letter, Brown had issued several other public statements against Hadi.
