A video from Keppel Corporation featuring its employees imitating the haka – an ancient New Zealand Maori war dance – has been taken down from the NDP Facebook page after it received criticism for being disrespectful to the Maori culture.

This comes after a torrent of comments on the Facebook post accusing the video of cultural appropriation.

The video was an entry for the NDP cheer competition which pits companies, government agencies and schools against each another.

The video reportedly had the most likes in the cheer video competition before it was taken down.

On Twitter, where Singapore-centric website SGAG shared the video, many users similarly slammed the video for being distasteful as well.

Some of the comments on Twitter include “Keppel stop embarrassing us!”, “This is just terrible” and “This is not what we want to see during our NDP!”.

However, not all found the video to be offensive.

One Twitter user wrote: “Everybody in the vid seems happy showing the flamboyant side of Keppel. It sure does humour us.”

The New Zealand Herald has even reported about the video, writing that the haka was “badly performed” and that it was a “mix of cringe”.
