Hamilton on Disney+: Here’s what Lin-Manuel Miranda and the original cast did after Broadway

There are very few upsides to lockdown but one is surely this: Lin-Manuel Miranda's Hamilton is finally available to watch at home.

Getting tickets for the hit musical has always been tough but thanks to Disney+ - and some seriously impressive technology - the Room Where it Happens is finally in your house.

The film has been a long time in the making and features footage of the original Broadway cast, who starred in the New York staging of the play back in 2015 and 2016.

In the years since, Miranda and his cast mates have gone on to achieve incredible things; both on-stage, on screen and in recording studios.

From starring in Netflix's most critically-acclaimed series to penning Oscar-nominated films, this lot have done it all.

Are they the busiest stars in the entertainment world? There's a strong possibility the answer is yes...

Lin-Manuel Miranda (who plays Alexander Hamilton)

Let’s start with the main man. As well as penning the Pulitzer prize-winning musical, Miranda played the titular character in both the off-Broadway and Broadway stagings of the play.

While he was already a hugely successful Broadway star, with numerous film and TV credits to his name before Hamilton, life after the musical has seen Miranda cement his status as one of the entertainment industry’s most-loved all-rounders.

In 2016, he helped pen the music and lyrics for Disney’s hit film Moana, landing an Oscar nomination in the process, and later starred as lovable lamp-lighter Jack in Mary Poppins Returns. While working on Hamilton, he contributed cantina scene music for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and wrote another track for The Rise of Skywalker.

His Disney affiliations are set to continue, as Miranda will team up with the legendary Alan Menken to write new music for the live-action remake of The Little Mermaid. He’s also overseen a film adaptation of his pre-Hamilton stage hit In The Heights, which will be released next year after being delayed to the ongoing pandemic.

He reprised the role of Hamilton for a three-week run in Puerto Rico, where as a child he spent a month of each year visiting his grandparents in January 2019.

In between all of this, he found time to temporarily move to Wales and star in the BBC’s smash-hit adaptation of His Dark Materials and sign another Disney deal, for an original animated movie set in Colombia.

Miranda has so far ticked off three of the awards needed for EGOT-status (winning multiple Tonys and a Grammy for Hamilton and an Emmy for Bigger, the track he wrote for the 2013 Tonys ceremony). Will the In The Heights adaptation finally land him the elusive Academy Award? Here’s hoping.

Leslie Odom Jr. (Aaron Burr)

While still starring on Broadway as Hamilton’s frenemy Burr, Leslie Odom Jr. worked on a spruced-up version of his self-titled 2014 debut album, re-releasing the jazz record in June 2016.

A month later, having won a Best Actor Tony for his incredible star turn as Burr, Odom left Hamilton behind and began work on his second album, a Christmas record released in November that year.

He’s also forayed into film and you might recognise Odom for his portrayal of Dr. Arbuthnot in Sir Kenneth Branagh’s (admittedly not-so-great) Murder on the Orient Expres. Last year, he starred in the Harriet Tubman biopic alongside Cynthia Eviro and Janelle Monae, before playing the leading man in the post-apocalyptic romance movie Only, opposite Freida Pinto.

As if that wasn’t enough, he’s also popped up in US series The Good Wife and Gotham, and penned an inspiring best-selling book, Failing Up.

Phillipa Soo (Eliza Hamilton)

After originating the role of Hamilton’s wife, Phillipa Soo plunged straight into another huge production by becoming the first star to play Amélie in a musical version of the hit movie, which toured the States before finding its home on Broadway.

She teamed up with her on-stage husband again to provide vocals for a villager character in Moana. Miranda later revealed that Soo had played a huge role in the development of the film, releasing a demo version of the movie’s Oscar-nominated track, How Far I’ll Go - which they casually recorded in a dressing room during Hamilton rehearsals in 2015.

Anthony Ramos (John Laurens/ Philip Hamilton)

Anthony Ramos should currently be dazzling viewers in the big screen version of In The Heights, which was supposed to arrive in cinemas last month.

The actor plays the narrator, Usnavi de la Vega, in the film and has huge shoes to fill, as the part was originated (and written) by Miranda. This is far from his first big screen appearance and fans of musical bonanzas will recognise Ramos from the latest iteration of A Star Is Born, in which he played Ally's best pal Ramon.

He's also starred in two much-hyped TV shows: the revival of classic comedy Will & Grace, and Spike Lee's She's Gotta Have It series.

Daveed Diggs (Marquis de Lafayette/Thomas Jefferson)

Daveed Diggs won legions of fans after taking on the dual role of Marquis de Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson - bagging a Grammy and a Tony along the way too.

Just like his castmates, Diggs has been seriously busy since and recently appeared in Netflix’s dystopian drama Snowpiercer, a TV adaption of Bong Joon-Ho’s 2013 film of the same name. He’s also appeared in Netflix’s The Get Down and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, as well as landing a recurring role in Black-Ish.

On the big screen, Diggs made his film debut by voicing a character in Zootopia and appeared in the moving Wonder, a 2017 hit featuring Owen Wilson and Julia Roberts.

Diggs is also incredibly talented when working on the other side of the camera, co-producing and co-starring in 2018’s Blindspotting, alongside his friend, actor and producer Rafael Casal.

He’ll reunite with Miranda on The Little Mermaid when he provides the voice for Sebastian.

Renée Elise Goldsberry (Angelica Schuyler)

Renée Elise Goldsberry’s phenomenal career began nearly two decades before she played Eliza’s sister (who arguably delivers the best song in the musical). In 1997, she landed a recurring role in the hit series Ally McBeal, featuring in a seriously impressive 48 episodes, and made her stage debut in a US tour of Dreamgirls, playing the late addition to the titular group, Michelle Morris.

She then racked up countless screen credits - in everything from Star Trek to Law & Order - while also forging ahead with a stage career, starring in the Broadway productions of The Lion King (as Nala, no less), The Colour Purple and Rent.

She also starred in the soap opera One Life To Live between 2003 and 2007, receiving two Daytime Emmy nominations.

Since hanging up her Angelica costume for the final time, the Tony Award-winner has remained busy, landing roles in TV series including The Get Down and Altered Carbon.

Jonathan Groff (King George III)

Jonathan Groff is yet another Hamilton star who was already enjoying a prolific career when he landed his role, playing the disgruntled King of England.

He left the Broadway production shortly before the rest of the original cast called it a day, deciding to pursue another project - Netflix’s hugely successful series Mindhunter.

Groff is also a much-loved member of the Disney family and reprised his voice roles as Kristoff and Sven for Frozen II.

He joined the cast of The Matrix 4 when filming began in February but production is currently on hiatus after the worldwide outbreak of coronavirus.

Christopher Jackson (George Washington)

Christopher Jackson has a long history of working with Miranda, having starred as Benny in In The Heights (both on and off-Brodway) before landing the role as the indomitable George Washington.

He also reunited with the writer and actor for Moana, providing the singing voice for Chief Tui.

In the time since the cast recording was completed, he's worked with another hugely-respected TV and film creator, Ava DuVernay, playing a defence lawyer in her must-watch Netflix series When They See Us. Jackson also voices a character in Apple TV's animated musical series Central Park.

Okieriete Onaodowan (Hercules Mulligan/James Madison)

Another star who took on a dual role, Okieriete Onaodowan has appeared in a number of TV shows that his cast mates have popped up in, such as Law and Order, The Get Down and She's Gotta Have It.

In 2017, Onaodowan also landed a role in a season six episode of Lena Dunham's Girls.

He's also (yup, still not done) appearedi n Grey's Anatomy, BoJack Horseman and action-drama Station 19.

Jasmine Cephas Jones (Peggy Schuyler/Maria Reynolds)

Last but definitely not least is Jasmine Cephas Jones, who played both Hamilton's sister-in-law and his mistress.

After originating the role, Jones appeared in another play, starring as Roxanne in an off-Broadway production of Cyrano.

On-screen, she's also popped up in HBO comedies Girls (you can spot her in the series six episodes Full Disclosure and The Bounce) and Mrs. Fletcher.

Her silver screen parts include a brief appearance as a theatre ensemble actor in Netflix's Oscar-winning film Marriage Story.

In a delightful twist, Jones and her Hamilton co-star Ramos started a relationship while rehearsing for Hamilton back in 2015.

The couple are still together and planning to get hitched.
