One person has died and several have been injured after a mass shooting inside a US nightclub, according to police.

A 28-year-old male was killed after someone opened fire at a bar in Connecticut, local police said.

Two men and two women were injured in the shooting, according to Paul Cicero, a lieutenant from Hartford Police.

Police officers stationed outside the nightclub reported the shooting in Hartford, Connecticut's capital city, at around 1.30am.

They were faced with a large number of people running towards the exits when they rushed in, Mr Cicero said.

“Everybody started pushing their way out to get away from the gunfire,” he said. “It was kind of pandemonium.”

No suspects have been detained, and police said the investigation is in its early stages.

“We’re not going to have anything for quite a bit of time,’ Mr Cicero said.

“This is a very complex investigation.”

Hartford Police said that two victims had surgery on Sunday morning, while two others were in a stable condition.

The shooting took place inside the Majestic Lounge, a nightclub in Hartford’s South End neighbourhood, according to officials.

Last month, the US saw three unrelated shootings in bars across one night.

One gunman opened fire inside a Texas club, another shot at queue outside Kansas City bar and another person attacked people at a nightclub in Fort Myers.

The majority of Americans support stricter gun laws to prevent mass shootings, according to a poll last year.
