Harvey Weinstein: What happens next after disgraced film producer convicted of rape and assault
Harvey Weinstein has been found guilty of sexual assault and third-degree rape, which lays out some key steps for him in the near future.
The verdict was announced on Monday as part of his criminal trial in New York City.
Weinstein was acquitted on three other counts, including predatory sexual assault. He now faces up to 29 years in prison – 25 of which stem from the assault charge.
The former Hollywood mogul was ordered by Judge James Burke to be taken to jail immediately after the verdict was announced. He was handcuffed and led away.
One of his lawyers said Weinstein was being taken to be held at a medical facility at Rikers Island jail.
Sentencing in the case has been scheduled for 11 March.
Weinstein’s defence team has said it intends to appeal the verdict. ”As sure as I’m a bald man, we will be appealing,” attorney Arthur Aidala said on Monday.
The former producer is also facing additional charges in Los Angeles. Those were announced in January, just as Weinstein’s New York trial was getting under way.
In that case, authorities allege that Weinstein raped one woman and sexually assaulted another on back-to-back nights during Oscars week in 2013.
He faces up to 28 years in prison in the California case.
