Singapore’s haze situation has improved, with the 24-hour Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) reading standing at 70-98 as of 9am on Sunday (28 August).

The data, provided by the National Environment Agency (NEA), also showed the three-hour PSI level to be at 73, while the PM2.5 reading was 25-52, reflecting normal levels of fine particulate matter in the air around the island.

The haze made its return on Friday (26 August), with many here donning masks as the air quality worsened.

On the same day, the NEA’s chief executive officer also wrote to his Indonesian counterpart to “register Singapore’s concerns over additional episodes of deterioration in air quality in Singapore should the fires continue”, the agency said in a release.

The haze experienced in Singapore is due to regional forest fires caused by the practice of open burning to clear land for agricultural uses.
