HBO has signed up a new animated satire series based on the royal family.

It's been created by US producer and writer Gary Janetti, one of the former executive producers of the sitcom Will & Grace.

The show, which will feature an all-star voice cast, is based on Janetti's popular Instagram account – it has nearly 900,000 followers – on which he posts about the royal family, particularly giving voice to the young Prince George.

Janetti, who has also written for Family Guy, will voice Prince George himself, with Orlando Bloom as Prince Harry, Condola Rashad at Meghan Markle, Lucy Punch as Kate Middleton, Tom Hollander as both Prince Philip and Prince Charles, Alan Cumming as Prince George’s butler Owen.

Elsewhere, Harry Potter star Frances De La Tour voices the Queen, with Game of Thrones actor Iwan Rheon as Prince William.

“I’m thrilled to be working at HBO Max and bringing them yet another series about a family ruthlessly fighting for the throne,” said Janetti, presumably referring to HBO’s other recent hit Succession.

It comes at a turbulent time for the Windsors, as they come to terms with Prince Harry and the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, stepping away from both their royal duties, and their Royal Highness titles.

It also follows the controversy surrounding Prince Andrew and his friendship with convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein, the subject of which was discussed in detail in an interview with the BBC before Christmas.

Janetti was also the creator of the sitcom Vicious for ITV, starring Sir Ian McKellen and Sir Derek Jacobi, which was panned by critics and ended after two series.
