Helen Mirren Debuts Vivid Blue Hair at Cannes Film Festival
Helen Mirren knows how to make a beauty statement.
The actress, 77, debuted brand-new blue and purple hair on the Cannes Film Festival red carpet. It's not clear whether or not the hair dye is temporary for the evening, or if Mirren will be rocking blue locks in the upcoming days and weeks.
Her blue hair coordinated with her custom Del Core taffeta blue gown. "She knows how to make an entrance," her stylist Lee Harris wrote on his Instagram. She finished her look with silver Sole Bliss platforms. Mirren was attending Cannes opening night in her capacity as an L'Oreal Ambassador, which is why she was posing on the red carpet with a fan that read #WorthIt.
The actress has embraced her gray hair in recent years. She told Vogue in 2021 that "the process of me losing the color of my hair was very easy—it just looked more and more as if I had been in the sun, but year-round. I put low lights in it in the past—and I’d like to do it again soon. I’ve always done it myself, I never went to have my hair colored; I couldn’t be bothered, it’s so boring and expensive. I think it can be more difficult [to go gray] if you have much darker hair, but the women of my age who have made the leap recently look so spectacular."
She added, "Going gray is to be encouraged—that’s not to say you can’t have fun with your hair, because it’s a very important part of how you feel about yourself. People should do whatever makes them feel comfortable."
Mirren is definitely having fun with her hair these days. This is not her first time showing up to Cannes with a new hair color. In 2019, she dyed her hair pink, though it was a much less dramatic look:
"I was watching an episode of America's Next Top Model and there was this little English girl on it. She had bright pink hair and she looked so great. Normally, she had sort of whitey-blonde [hair], like me," Mirren told People at the time. "She went pink one week and then the next week she wasn't pink and the next week she was pink again. So I realized it was something you could come and go with really easily. So I thought, 'Well, I'll do pink for the night.'"
She added, "And of course, you've got these great dyes now. You can wash them in, wash them out. So the great thing about this color is it's a great base for going pink or green or blue." Tonight at Cannes marks her first time with blue hair.
