A pupil from Henry Park Primary School (HPPS) whose obscene gesture at the National Day Parade (NDP) on Wednesday (9 August) was caught on camera has been counselled by the school and his parents, said the principal of HPPS, Chia Soo Keng.

Speaking to The Straits Times, Chia said the boy was “deeply apologetic” and regretted what he did.

Footage of the incident went viral online after the boy showed his middle finger to the camera at the end of the NDP, which was held at The Float at Marina Bay. A photo showing a man speaking to the boy was also circulated widely.

Henry Park Primary School Alumni Association posted several pictures of the HPPS schoolchildren who performed at the NDP on its Facebook page.

In response to several comments about the incident in its post, the association said, “Let’s not speculate and celebrate the hard work and performance by the kids. They did well and we will remember the performance for that!”
