Here's How to Watch the 2020 Emmy Awards

From Town & Country

It's television's biggest night, though, this year, it will take on a new form. In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 Emmy Awards will be held virtually, rather than at Los Angeles' Microsoft Theatre. While the event's structure poses a logistical hassle (to say the least) many of your favorite stars will still show up, albeit separately and from their own homes. Jimmy Kimmel is still set to helm the program, hosting from an empty Staples Center.

“Believe me, I’m not up for any challenge. If there’s a challenge, I would prefer to go take a nap, but I agreed to host the Emmys in, like, I don’t know, November of last year. So, you know, I got into this before the pandemic, and so things changed significantly from when I said yes, but I figured since I said yes, I had to stick with it," Kimmel told Deadline. "It’s going to be a more complicated job than it usually is.”

The leading nominees this year include HBO's Watchmen, Amazon's The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Netflix's Ozark, and HBO's Succession. Whether you're tuning in to see who wins, or simply to peek inside celebrity homes, here's everything you need to know about the 2020 Emmy Awards.

When are the Emmys?

The show will air this Sunday, September 20 at 8 p.m. EST. The show will last approximately three hours.

How will a virtual awards show work?

Staples Center in Los Angeles is acting as the show's home base—this is where Kimmel will be stationed. Some of the awards' presenters will also film their segment from the empty arena, though the numbers will be kept small for safety reasons. All of the other filming will be happening remotely. Deadline noted that there will be 140 cameras spread out among different celebrity and nominee homes.

This remote filming, however, will not preclude celebrities from dressing up. "Our informal theme for the night is 'come as you are, but make an effort!'" read a July letter to nominees, from Kimmel and the show's producers.

It is unclear how much of the event will be live versus pre-recorded, but one thing remains the same: no one will know the award winners until the envelopes are opened.

"None of the executive producers know who’s going to win. That would save me a huge amount of work if I knew who was going to win each category, but no one is interested in saving me a huge amount of work," Kimmel said.

How can I watch the broadcast?

There are a few ways to tune into the Emmys. First, you can watch the show live on ABC from your television. You can also stream the broadcast on a computer, phone, tablet, or smart TV through Hulu Live or YouTube TV. Both services offer free trials before you sign up for a subscription.
