  • Disney has decided to release the live-action Mulan remake on Disney+.

  • The movie will be available to Disney+ subscribers on September 4.

  • For now, Disney+ subscribers still have to pay a premium fee on top of the subscription price to watch Mulan.

  • The movie will be available to all subscribers for no extra fee on December 4.

At the beginning of the year, one of the most exciting 2020 family movie releases was the live-action remake of Mulan, starring Liu Yifei, Donnie Yen and Jet Li. It was supposed to come out in March, but the COVID-19 pandemic put the film on hold. The release date was delayed multiple times throughout the summer in hopes that the movie could be shown on the big screen. And while Mulan may finally see a theatrical release in other countries, in the United States, the opening of movie theaters is still a big question mark. So, in early August, Disney finally made the big decision to stop waiting for theaters to open and send it right to people's homes. As of now, Mulan has a video-on-demand (VOD) release date of September 4 — with the big caveat that it's going to cost some extra cash. Here's how to watch.

How to Watch and Stream Disney's Live-Action Mulan

First off, you have to be a Disney+ subscriber. Other kid's movies that came out on VOD this year, like Scoob! or Trolls: World Tour, weren't tied to a single platform: You could get them through Amazon, iTunes or your streamer of choice. Mulan, like Artemis Fowl or Timmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made before it, will only be available on Disney's own streaming service. The service costs $7/month, or $70 for a whole year.

But even if you're willing to pay the subscription fee, you won't have access to Mulan right away when it comes out on September 4. In addition to the subscription fee, families have to pay another $30 to watch the film. (That's about $10 more than it cost for the premium rental of Scoob! or Trolls: World Tour when they came out.) It's not exactly a "rental fee," because after you pay the $30, you can re-watch Mulan for as long as you have Disney+. But it's not exactly a purchase, either, since you can only watch on the Disney+ streaming service — you don't own a digital copy that you can watch through other means.

And there's another twist: According to the Disney+ site, the ability to pay for "premiere access" to Mulan will only last until November 2 — and on December 4, the film will be available to all Disney+ subscribers for free.

It'll be interesting to see if the plan works for Disney+. If it does, then other delayed films, like Marvel's Black Widow, might follow. We could be in for an exciting fall full of at-home Disney films.
